I have mentioned in many
posts on Shoegal Out In The World that I am in the middle of my MBA and more
specifically I am writing at the moment my Master Dissertation and hopefully I
will present it and graduate in June.
Before applying for the MBA
in the Open University of Cyprus, I took under consideration the pros of
e-learning and the flexibility it offered since at the time I was working a
full time job, worked on translation projects part-time and started blogging.
However there are cons as well compared with Campus learning. As my
post-graduate studies come to an end, I thought it would be useful for all those
who consider applying for an online degree undergraduate or postgraduate to
tell you my opinion on the pros and cons of e-learning.

PROS
OF E-LEARNING
1. Flexibility – The e-learning content can be done in sections, to
fit around an already busy schedule. Unlike traditional in Campus training, you don’t have a structured schedule to dictate when you access
your e-learning content. Online learning gives you full flexibility to

This is the main
reason I chose Open University of Cyprus and e-learning. I am in my fourth year
in my MBA studies and chose every year the number of Modules according to the
time I had in my hands. I still had academic obligations to study and work on papers and exams but I
didn’t have to run from one part of the city to another after a full day at
work to attend classes.

2. Lower Cost – E-learning allows you to learn from anywhere. Since
you aren’t using a trainer’s time or equipment, online learning becomes a more
affordable option. With the exception of your own computer or mobile device,
you generally don’t have many other expenses.

Of course, there are the tuition
fees that in some cases can be considerable, in my case they were because MBA programmes
whether on campus or e-learning tend to be rather expensive. However with some
research and depending on the field you want to study and the kind of studies,
undergraduate, postgraduate, workshops, seminars the cost can be manageable. In
the end it is an investment for yourself and future.

3. Mobility – Instead of the confinement of a traditional classroom,
you have the flexibility to learn in any location you’d like, including on a
train or a plane. E-learning allows you to take full advantage of your time and
get things done when you wouldn’t normally be able to.

For me that was one of
the most important factors that made me choose e-learning, because postgraduate
studies on campus with a full time job in a big city are two conflicting
things. There were academic commitments, where a physical presence was required but they
were only 6-7 times through the academic year and only on weekends.

CONS OF E-LEARNING
1. Lack of Structure – Sometimes a learner with low
motivation can quickly fall behind in an online course. With a loose schedule
or routine, e-learning can become difficult for people to meet specific
deadlines or goals.

Fortunately, for me that was not an issue because there was
a firm and steady schedule of paper deadlines and academic meet ups, so I knew
before hand when I had to do what and I when I needed to run an extra mile and
study harder. But I am struggling at the moment with my Master Dissertation
because I have to create my own study schedule and stick to it and since I am
not the most organized person in the world it’s a struggle and a challenge that
I am sure I can overcome.

requirements at the very beginning or your course. The learner needs to have
devices that are compatible with the e-learning software. Of course, there is
always the risk of having technology issues when using computers so heavily,
such as internet connection or power reliability.

I had two issues//real
stories from my experience to share. One was that I somehow two days before a
paper deadline, I managed to loose my almost finished paper using Dropbox but I
think this could have happened as well if I studied on Campus. The second
happened last year on the eve of my Marketing exams when my computer crashed
and I couldn’t study my notes, e-books etc. If I studied on Campus I wouldn’t
use e-books rather traditional textbooks so this wouldn’t be an issue. Thankfully,
a year after starting the MBA, I invested on a net book as a backup option and after
freaking out for some minutes, I opened my net book and continued studying with
it. So, for those who chose e-learning, I would urge you to invest on a backup
device (ex. net book, tablet, etc.) because your laptop//desktop is the most
important tool of your studies and it is better to be on the safe side rather
than sorry.

This wasn’t an issue for me but
I know by experience that many fellow classmates had issues due to limited
computer knowledge, especially those who where quiet older. You need to work on
computer skills and learn the basics of some programmes such as Office Word,
Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, Acrobat Reader, e-mailing and of course the platform on
which the programme runs with.

Έχω αναφέρει σε πολλά posts στο Shoegal Out In The World ότι βρίσκομαι στα μέσα του MBA και πιο συγκεκριμένα γράφω αυτή την περίοδο τη Μεταπτυχιακή Διατριβή μου και καλώς εχόντων των πραγμάτων θα την παρουσιάσω και θα αποφοιτήσω τον Ιούνιο.
Πριν κάνω την αίτησή μου για το MBA του Ανοιχτού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, έλαβα υπόψιν μου τα πλεονεκτήματα και τα μειονεκτήματα του e-learning και την ευελιξία που προσέφερε καθώς εκείνη την περίοδο δούλευα full time, ασχολούμουν part-time με μεταφραστικά projects και είχα μόλις ξεκινήσει το blogging. Ωστόσο υπάρχουν και αρνητικά σε σύγκριση με την εκπαίδευση δια ζώσης. Καθώς οι μεταπτυχιακές μου σπουδές τελειώνουν, σκέφτηκα πώς θα ήταν χρήσιμο για όλες όσες σκέφτονται να κάνουν αίτηση για κάποιο online πτυχίο είτε σε προπτυχιακό είτε σε μεταπτυχιακό επίπεδο, να μοιραστώ τις προσωπικές μου εμπειρίες και απόψεις σχετικά με τα πλεονεκτήματα και τα μειονεκτήματα του e-learning.
ΠΛΕΟΝΕΚΤΗΜΑΤΑ E-LEARNING
1. Ευελιξία – Το περιεχόμενο του e-learning μπορεί να ολοκληρώνεται σε τμήματα, για να προσαρμόζεται με ένα ήδη φορτωμένο πρόγραμμα. Αντίθετα από την παραδοσιακή εκπαίδευση στα Πανεπιστήμια, δεν υπάρχει δομημένο πρόγραμμα που να υπαγορεύει πότε θα πρέπει να εισέλθει ο σπουδαστής στο περιεχόμενο και την πλατφόρμα του e-learning. Η online εκαίδευση προσφέρει πλήρη ευελιξία για να πετύχει ο σπουδαστής τους στόχους του, στο δικό του χρόνο.
Αυτός είναι ο κύριος λόγος που επέλεξα το Ανοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου και το e-learning. Βρίσκομαι στον τέταρτο χρόνο των σπουδών μου στο MBA και κάθε έτος επέλεγα τον αριθμό των Θεματικών Ενοτήτων ανάλογα με το διαθέσιμο χρόνο μου. Παρόλα αυτά είχα ακόμη ακαδημαϊκές υποχρεώσεις να διαβάσω και να παραδώσω εργασίες και εξετάσεις, αλλά δεν χρειαζοταν να τρέχω από το ένα σημείο της πόλης στο άλλο μετά από μία κουραστική ημέρα στη δουλειά για να παρακολουθήσω τα μαθήματα του μεταπτυχιακού.
2. Χαμηλό Κόστος – Το e-learning επιτρέπει στον σπουδαστή να μάθει από οπουδήποτε. Καθώς δεν χρησιμοποιεί το χρόνο ή τον εξοπλισμό του εκπαιδευτή, η online εκπαίδευση γίνεται μία πιο οικονομική επιλογή. Με την εξαίρεση του υπολογιστή ή του tablet, σε γενικές γραμμές δεν έχετε άλλα έξοδα.
Φυσικά, υπάρχουν και τα δίδακτρα που σε μερικές περιπτώσεις είναι αρκετά ακριβά, στη δική μου περίπτωση καθώς τα προγράμματα MBA είτε δια ζώσης είτε μέσω e-learning είναι σε γενικές γραμμές αρκετά ακριβά. Ωστόσο με έρευνα και ανάλογα με τον τομέα που θέλετε να σπουδάσετε, αλλά και του είδους των σπουδών που θέλετε να κάνετε, προπτυχιακές, μεταπτυχιακές, workshops, σεμινάρια το κόστος μπορεί να μην είναι ιδιαίτερα μεγάλο. Στο τέλος της ημέρας, οι σπουδές είναι μία επένδυση που κάνετε για τον εσάς και το μέλλον σας.
3. Κινητικότητα – Αντί για τον εγκλεισμό της παραδοσιακής τάξης, ο σπουδαστής έχει την ευελιξία να μαθαίνει από οποιαδήποτε μέρος θέλει, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των μέσων μαζικής μεταφοράς. Το e-learning επιτρέπει στον καθένα να εκμεταλλευτεί πλήρως το χρόνο του και να κάνει πράγματα που σε διαφορετική περίπτωση αυτό δεν θα ήταν εφικτό.
Για εμένα αυτός ήταν ένας από τους σημαντικότερους παράγοντες που με έκαναν να επιλέξω το e-learning, καθώς μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές δια ζώσης σε συνδυασμό με full time εργασία είναι δύο αντικρουόμενα πράγματα. Υπήρχαν φυσικά ακαδημαϊκές υποχρεώσεις, όπου απαιτούνταν φυσική παρουσία μόνο 6-7 φορές μέσα στο ακαδημαϊκό έτος και αυτές γινόταν μόνο Σαββατοκύριακο.
ΜΕΙΟΝΕΚΤΗΜΑΤΑ E-LEARNING
1. Ελλειψη Δομής – Μερικές φορές ο σπουδαστής με χαμηλή παρακίνηση μπορεί έυκολα να μείνει πίσω σε ένα online course. Με ένα χαλαρό πρόγραμμα ή ρουτίνα, το e-learning μπορεί να είναι δύσκολο για τους ανθρώπους να πετύχουν συγκεκριμένους στόχους και να είναι συνεπείς σε προθεσμίες.
Ευτυχώς, για εμένα αυτό δεν αποτέλεσε πρόβλημα γιατί υπήρχε ένα προκαθορισμένο, σταθερό πρόγραμμα για προθεσμίες εργασιών και ακαδημαϊκές συναντήσεις, έτσι ήξερα εκ των προτέρων πότε έπρεπε να κάνω τί και πότε έπρεπε να δώσω τον καλύτερό μου ευατό και να διαβάσω ακόμη περισσότερο. Αλλά, δυσκολεύομαι αυτή την περίοδο με την Μεταπτυχιακή Διατριβή γιατί πρέπει να φτιάξω το δικό μου πλάνο διαβάσματος και να μείνω προσηλωμένη σε αυτό και καθώς δεν είμαι ο πιο οργανωτικός άνθρωπος στον κόσμο είναι ένας αγώνας και μία πρόκληση που είμαι σίγουρη ότι θα την ξεπεράσω.
2. Τεχνολογικά Ζητήματα – Είναι σημαντικό να κατανοήσει κανείς τις τεχνολογικές προϋποθέσεις στην αρχή του course. Ο σπουδαστής χρειάζεται να διαθέτει συσκευές συμβατές με το λογισμικό του e-learning. Φυσικά, υπάρχει πάντα ο κίνδυνος να υπάρξουν τεχνολογικά ζητήματα όταν χρησιμοποιεί κανείς συτηματικά και σε μεγάλο βαθμό υπολογιστές, όπως η σύνδεση στο διαδίκτυο ή η αξιοπιστία του ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος.
Αντιμετώπισα δύο ζητήματα//πραγματικές ιστορίες από την εμπειρία μου να μοιραστώ μαζί σας. Η πρώτη, ήταν όταν με κάποιο τρόπο δύο ημέρες πριν την προθεσμία παράδοσης μίας εργασίας, κατάφερα να την χάσω ενώ ήταν σχεδόν τελειωμένη χρησιμοποιώντας το Dropbox, αλλά πιστεύω ότι αυτό θα μπορούσε να συμβεί ακόμη και αν σπούδαζα δια ζώσης. Η δεύτερη, συνέβει πέρυσι την παραμονή των εξετάσεων μου στο Marketing όταν ο υπολογιστής μου κράσαρε και δεν μπορούσα να διαβάσω τις σημειώσεις, τα e-books κτλ. Αν σπούδαζα δια ζώσης, δεν θα χρησιμοποιούσα e-books αλλά παραδοσιακά βιβλία έτσι δεν θα αντιμετώπιζα αυτό το θέμα. Ευτυχώς, ένα χρόνο αφότου ξεκίνησα το MBA, επένδυσα σε ένα net book ως backup και αφού φρίκαρα για μερικά λεπτά, άνοιξα το net book και συνέχισα να διαβάζω. Έτσι, για αυτούς που επιλέγουν το e-learning, θα σας συνιστούσα να επενδύσετε μία συσκευή για backup (πχ. net book, tablet, κτλ.) γιατί το laptop//desktop είναι το σημαντικότερο εργαλείο των σπουδών σας και είναι καλύτερα να είστε καλυμμένοι για να μην βρεθείτε απέναντι σε κάποια δυσάρεστη έκπληξη.
3. Γνώσεις Χρήση Υπολογιστή – Ο σπουδαστής μπορεί να μην αισθάνεται άνετα με τη χρήση του υπολογιστή. Ακόμη και αν το λογισμικό είναι φιλικό προς τον χρήστη, μπορεί να είναι μία τρομακτική εργασία για κάποιους. Αυτός ο συγκεκριμένος σπουδαστής μπορεί να δυσκολεύεται, και πιθανόν να είναι πιθο επιτυχημένος στις σπουδΈς του στο περιβάλλον μίας παραδοσιακής τάξης.
Αυτό δεν αποτέλεσε πρόβλημα για εμένα αλλά γνωρίζω από την εμπειρία μου ότι πολλοί συμφοιτητές μου αντιμετώπιζαν θέματα εξαιτίας των περιορισμένων γνώσεν στη χρήση του υπολογιστή, ιδιαίτερα εκείνοι που ήταν μεγαλύτερης ηλικίας. Θα πρέπει να δουλέψετε πάνω στις δεξιότητες σας στη χρήση του υπολογιστή και να μάθετε τις βασικές λειτουργίες μερικών προγραμμάτων όπως Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, Acrobat Reader, αποστολή e-mail και φυσικά την πλατφόρμα πάνω στην οποία τρέχει το πρόγραμμα που παρακολουθείτε.
